Interesting situation. If it were me, it’s hard to say what I would do Being in my line of work, I’ve came acosrs situations when I have found money when removing old carpeting. If the customer left a pig mess for me to clean up, or old gonch, extra crap to move, etc I put it in my pocket! If it seemed they respected that my job is tough enough to begin with, and don’t leave me extra crap to do, I’ll leave the money on the kitchen counter. This is usually loose change, and seldom more than a couple bucks. But hey! Scottish blood runs in my veins, so a penny found is a penny earned lolA couple of years ago, I carpeted a strip-club bar. It was stinky and gross old smoke & beer stench Yuck! Almost surrounding the entire perimeter of this club’ was a baseboard heating system. As I tore the old carpet out from under these heaters, hundreds of dollars worth of Toonies, Loonies, and other loose change came flying out!Needless to say I gathered it up, threw it in a sink there, washed it thoroughly, and kept it As a stink charge’ Mwa-hahaha!Man, I can be a long-winded son-of-a-gun sometimes Sorry Kat!Regarding the OP, I agree with Olrik. It should have been split, 50-50. If it were me, as contractor or homeowner, that’s what I would have wanted to do in that situation.
